Some people want to carry serious photographic ability without the bulk. The FinePix E900 Zoom was developed for such people. Its pedigree is assured by the presence of the acclaimed Super CCD HR, which gives a lot more than just resolution. Top end colour reproduction, contrast and dynamic range are available from this camera, which gives the added benefit of RAW format shooting – the ultimate for any photographer who wants to achieve the best possible image quality.

The E900 Zoom's 9 million effective pixel image size is interesting enough. But what makes the camera much more special is the attention to detail given to the CCD – the most important component of any digital camera. Crucially, Fujifilm develops and manufactures its own CCDs for top-end cameras, and has perfected the unique octagonal structure of the Super CCD, now in its 5th generation. Because Super CCD image capture is not along traditional vertical/horizontal grid lines, the images do not look as 'digitised' as conventional digital camera images.

The signal from any digital camera CCD needs careful processing in order to extract the purest image. This is why Fujifilm developed Real Photo Technology, to allow the Super CCD sensor to deliver better results in lower light conditions. After all, photography is all about the capture of light, and the biggest challenge is making the most of limited light. A sensitivity range of ISO 80-800 gives the E900 Zoom a crucial advantage over conventional compacts that can only reach ISO 400.

This is a zoom lens built without compromise, intended to extract every last ounce of detail right across the frame. Fujinon lenses have long been used by the world's best photographers and film camera crews in order to achieve the best possible image quality. A 9 million effective pixel sensor is pointless unless the optics are there to harness it, and that is just what the E900 Zoom's lens does.

Often associated with high-end digital SLRs, the RAW format is an uncompressed and unprocessed file that allows the user to exert control over many image parameters. Once loaded to a computer, the RAW can be outputted in an uncompressed TIFF file, rather than the much smaller jpeg file, meaning that no corners are cut in the recording of the image.

The E900 Zoom is an accomplished camera with advanced automatic techniques to get the right result out of any situation. However, crucially, it also allows you to take complete control over exposure and focus. Not only offering aperture-priority and shutter priority modes, it also gives full manual exposure for total creativity. As for focus, it can be overridden by using the manual focus option within the camera menu.

The camera's ability is further underlined by some impressive speed statistics. The screen refresh rate is an incredible 60fps in High-Speed Shooting mode, whilst still having time to achieve continual autofocus. And with a shutter time lag of just 0.01 seconds, 1.3 seconds between frames for 40 consecutive shots and just 1.3 seconds needed for start-up, this is a camera with truly rapid reactions.
